Here we provide information about books, with annotations, that you may find useful. The list is not large at this time, but we expect it to grow as people share resources they have found useful.
Type 1 Diabetes
Understanding Diabetes H. Peter Chase |
This book is an excellent, in depth discussion of diabetes with an emphasis on the similarities and differences between Type 1 and Type 2. However, if you are newly diagnosed, it can be a bit intense, so take it slowly. |
A First Book for Understanding Diabetes H. Peter Chase |
This book, a companion to Understanding Diabetes, is very child friendly, though it is an excellent place for the parent to start as well. Further, this book is an excellent resource for your child when facing how to explain diabetes to classmates at school. |
Real Life Parenting Virginia Loy |
This book was extremely helpful for us as parents. It describes the experiences of the Loy family from the perspective of the parents. There is a second book written by the boys (both of whom have Type 1) that is especially helpful for youth and teens (see Getting a Grip on Diabetes, below). |
Taking Diabetes to School Kim Gosselin |
A simple "read aloud" style story that helps young children (and even older ones) understand and even help children with diabetes that they meet in school. This is a great book for your child to take to school and share or to give to a teacher so that it can be used for the whole class. |
Getting a Grip on Diabetes Spike Loy, Bo Loy |
This excellent book, written by two teens with Type 1, targets youth and teens dealing with diabetes. It is written by the Loy sons (see Real Life Parenting, above). It is an excellent read, told from the heart, dealing with the real-life experiences, both bad and good. The message is that diabetes does not need to stop or even greatly change your life - you can do anything you want, as long as you have a "grip" on your diabetes and help from family and friends. |
Cheating Destiny James S Hirsch |
This is a powerful book written by a Type 1 diabetic for diabetics and their families. It is both an accurate journalistic treatment of the history, culture, and treatment of the condition and a very personal story of the daily struggle faced by all diabetics and their families. |
Gluten-free Cooking
Artisanal Gluten-Free Cooking Kelli Bronski, Peter Bronski |
This book is filled with more than 250 gluten-free recipes. More importantly, it is based on the authors' experiences and love of both cooking and consuming good food. The approach is "from scratch" rather than packaged supplies. |
The Gluten-Free Gourmet Cooks Fast and Healthy Beth Hagman |
As with most cookbooks, this one is filled with wonderful recipes. What makes it more valuable is the comments and focus on both addressing Celiac issues and making suggestions to improve shopping for gluten-free foods and ingredients. |
Gluten-Free Baking Classics Annalise G. Roberts |
Meats and vegetables are great and OK, but what about bread, cookies, pie - the "good" stuff? This book is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to bake and dealing with a gluten-free requirement. |
Camping Cooking
Cooking Merit Badge Boy Scouts of America |
For anyone interested in outdoor cooking, this is a great starting point. All of the basics of meal planning and preparation as well as types of cooking are covered. It is not a great source for recipes, but provides all of the other essential information. |
Camp Cookery for Small Groups Boy Scouts of America |
A wonderful collection of recipes for small groups - 4 to 8 people - with a variety of cooking methods is presented. While the focus is on small groups, many of the recipes will scale to larger groups. |
World Championship Dutch Oven Cookbook Juanita Kohler, et.al. |
This is an excellent resource for those wanting to do more than simple cakes or stews with a dutch oven. It includes information about the care of dutch ovens and guidelines for controlling temperate. Perhaps more importantly, many of the recipes are championship recipes from many years of dutch oven cook-offs. |
Cooking the Dutch Oven Way, Third Edition Woody Woodruff, Ellen Woodruff Anderson, Jane Woodruff |
A wonderful dutch oven cookbook, it focuses clear, step-by-step instructions for each recipe. This approach makes it easy to quickly cook like a pro with your dutch oven. |
Cooking on a Stick: Campfire Recipes for Kids Linda White |
This is a great little book that is full of recipes that will fascinate and involve young people in cooking. The recipes are largely low-tech and simple in terms of the tools needed to make them. And, they will amaze the young and not-so-young. |
