Resources

As our family, both immediate and extended, has struggled to cope with Type 1 and George's needs at home, at school, and in daily life, we have found several excellent books that we highly recommend.

Books About Diabetes and Families

Understanding Diabetes

This book is an excellent, in depth discussion of diabetes with an emphasis on the similarities and differences between Type 1 and Type 2. However, if you are newly diagnosed, it can be a bit intense, so take it slowly.

Real Life Parenting

This book was extremely helpful for us as parents. It describes the experiences of the Loy family from the perspective of the parents. There is a second book written by the boys (both of whom have Type 1) that is especially helpful for youth and teens (see Getting a Grip on Diabetes, below).

A First Book for Understanding Diabetes

This book, a companion to Understanding Diabetes, is very child friendly, though it is an excellent place for the parent to start as well. Further, this book is an excellent resource for your child when facing how to explain diabetes to classmates at school.

Taking Diabetes to School

A simple "read aloud" style story that helps young children (and even older ones) understand and even help children with diabetes that they meet in school. This is a great book for your child to take to school and share or to give to a teacher so that it can be used for the whole class.

Getting a Grip on Diabetes

This excellent book, written by two teens with Type 1, targets youth and teens dealing with diabetes. It is written by the Loy sons (see Real Life Parenting, above). It is an excellent read, told from the heart, dealing with the real-life experiences, both bad and good. The message is that diabetes does not need to stop or even greatly change your life - you can do anything you want, as long as you have a "grip" on your diabetes and help from family and friends.

Cheating Destiny

This is a powerful book written by a Type 1 diabetic for diabetics and their families. It is both an accurate journalistic treatment of the history, culture, and treatment of the condition and a very personal story of the daily struggle faced by all diabetics and their families.
